George Leslie Wood

Commissioned in the 9th Battalion DLI as a Second Lieutenant in 1933, he went with his battalion to France in 1940, where he won the Military Cross in the battles before Dunkirk. He later transferred to 6 DLI and fought in North Africa at Gazala, El Alamein and Mareth and in the invasion of Sicily, when he was awarded his MC Bar.
On D-Day, he took command of 6 DLI during the landings and served until the end of the war. After the war, he remained in the Territorial Army, reforming 8 DLI in 1947.
George Wood died at Newcastle in 1969, aged 57.
